About the Image Converter
The Image Converter changes the format of a picture between PNG, JPEG and WebP. Choose it when a website asks for JPG but your file is PNG, when you want the smaller WebP format for your own site, or when you need a lossless PNG from another type.
Conversion uses your browser's canvas. The image is read on your device, redrawn and saved in the new format, without being sent to HandyHex. WebP output depends on browser support; current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari handle it.
How to use it
- Click Choose image and select a file.
- Pick the Output format: PNG, JPEG or WebP.
- Press Convert and download.
Choosing a format
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, ideal for logos and screenshots.
JPEG is best for photographs and gives small files, but has no transparency; transparent areas become a solid colour.
WebP usually gives smaller files than both at similar quality.
Real-world examples
Website upload rejected. A form wants JPG but your screenshot is PNG: convert to JPEG and upload.
Faster pages. Convert large PNG photos to WebP to cut their size, often by half or more.
Needing transparency. Convert a JPG logo to PNG before placing it on a coloured background (note it will not add transparency by itself).
Common mistakes
Converting a transparent PNG to JPEG fills the empty areas with a solid colour. Converting repeatedly between lossy formats lowers quality each time, so always convert from your original. A tiny or already compressed JPEG may get larger as PNG, because PNG stores every pixel exactly.
How it works
Your browser decodes the image, paints it onto an invisible canvas, then asks the canvas to export that picture in the chosen format with toBlob. This is why supported formats depend on your browser, and why nothing leaves your device.
