About the Tip Calculator
The Tip Calculator finds the tip amount, the total you will pay, and each person's share when a bill is split. Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people.
Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people. Tipping customs vary by country, and some restaurants already add a service charge, so check the receipt first.
How to use it
- Enter the Bill amount.
- Set the Tip (%) and the number of People.
- Read the tip, the total and the per-person amount.
Quick tips
In the United States 15 to 20 percent is common in restaurants; in many countries a small round-up or no tip is normal.
If someone only had a drink, split the bill unevenly by calculating separately.
The tool ignores rounding to coins, so round up when paying.
Real-world examples
Restaurant bill. A 120 bill with an 18 percent tip comes to 141.60, or 35.40 each for four people.
Taxi or delivery. Quickly work out a 10 percent tip.
Group trips. Split a large bill evenly.
Common mistakes
Tipping on top of a service charge already added to the bill. Entering tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive totals inconsistently. Splitting evenly when people ordered very different amounts. Local customs vary, so check what is normal in the country you are in.
How it works
Tip = bill × tip percent ÷ 100. Total = bill × (1 + tip percent ÷ 100). Per person = total ÷ the number of people, with at least one person always assumed so you never divide by zero.
