About the Character Counter

The Character Counter measures the exact length of your text. It is ideal for fields with fixed limits, such as SMS messages, meta descriptions, bios, usernames and ad headlines.

It reports total characters, characters without spaces, words, sentences and letters. Spaces, punctuation and line breaks all count as characters in the main total.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type text into the box.
  2. Read the Characters and Without spaces totals.
  3. Copy or clear the text with the buttons.

Where length limits matter

A single SMS holds 160 basic characters; longer messages are split.

Page titles are usually trimmed in search results at around 60 characters.

Some emoji count as more than one character in certain systems, so leave a small safety margin.

Real-world examples

SEO snippets. Keep page titles near 60 characters and descriptions under about 155.

SMS and ads. A text message has 160 characters in basic encoding; ad headlines often have far fewer.

Usernames and bios. Platforms cap them at set lengths.

Common mistakes

Forgetting that spaces and line breaks count. Some emoji and symbols count as two characters in certain systems, so leave a margin. Fancy punctuation from word processors (curly quotes) is still one character each.

How it works

The count is the length of the string in the browser, and letters are counted with a Unicode-aware pattern, so accented and non-Latin letters are recognised correctly. 'Without spaces' removes every whitespace character first.

Frequently asked questions

Do spaces count?

Yes in the main total; the second figure excludes them.

What about emoji?

They are counted by browser string length, so some may count as two.

Is it private?

Yes, nothing is sent anywhere.
